Rhian Sheehan is an award winning New Zealand based composer & producer of cinematic music who is known for his unique melding of experimental electronica with orchestral music and environmental sound recordings. Predominantly writing music for Film & Television, he has also released 5 albums to date. His debut album ‘Paradigm Shift’ (LOOP Recordings) is regarded as a landmark in New Zealand electronica, and his 2009 and 2011 albums “Standing in Silence” & “Seven Tales of The North Wind” are both regarded by many as classics amongst the post-rock ambient genre.

This album picks up where "We Give and We Get" left off. To me it feels like the last album of a 3-album arc that began with "All the Little Things" then continued with "We Give and We Get" and now, with "Take Care and Safe Home," finishes. A couple of the songs near the end of the album are surprisingly upbeat! This doesn't signal a new direction for The Candlepark Stars: those are just nice surprises to be found along the way.

Anoice is a Tokyo based six piece group formed by Takahiro Kido, Taku Tanioka, Yuki Murata, Utaka Fujiwara, Takahiro Matsue and Tadashi Yoshikawa who are the multi instruments players, and have been working together since 2004. Their debut album "Remmings" in which Non-Format took charge of art works, was released from Important Records, Boston 2006, while their second album "Out of Season" and third "Ruined-Hotel Sessions" recorded at the ruin hotel, were released from Ricco Label that is their own music label in Tokyo, 2008. Many artists all over the world thought highly of these three albums. Anoice also has some other projects such as RiLF (an alternative rock band formed by the members of Anoice and Calu who is the vocalist of Matryoshka), mokyow (a post-rock band formed by Takahiro Kido, Takahiro Matsue and Tadashi Yoshikawa who are the members of anoice, and the keyboardist Kenichi Kai) and cru (a neo-classical unit formed by Takahiro Kido and Yuki Murata), and some secret projects.

The post-rock duo's lush and thunderous live show does more with two musicians onstage than most bands two or three times their size, with the help of a suitcase full of effects pedals and a dazzling DIY light show. With Dan Cohan switching between drums and guitar and James Klink juggling guitar and keyboards, the duo pile on layers of loops and beautiful overlapping tangles of melody and polyrhythms. Building each song up and tearing it back down with linear song structures and ingenious arrangements, The Water transcend predictable soft-loud-soft dynamics but almost always reach a euphoric crescendo, often accompanied by a flash of color from the strange obelisk of light that stands center stage.

Here’s a CD in a brown recycled cardboard package so you probably know what it sounds like as everything in brown recycled cardboard packages sounds either pastoral or droney right? This one ain’t a collaboration. It’s a split CD with 2 tracks by the 6meister who is travelling a darker doomier path than usual but it still has his instantly recognisable trademark guitar musings there to keep you grounded. Egsun is a name I’ve not heard for years but they make a lovely neoclassical racket. Strings and dare I say more twinkles! It’s very maudlin sounding (in fact the whole CD is) so if you’re after some party music you’d better stop reading now! It’s a lovely sounding CD with the Egsun tracks being my favourite on this particular release. more...

Alcest is a French band created by Neige (also in Amesoeurs, Peste Noire and Forgotten Woods) in early 2000. He began writing songs on his own but a few months afterwards Argoth (bass) and Famine from Peste Noire (lead guitar) joined him and his solo project became a real band. "Tristesse Hivernale" Alcest's first demo which was composed by Neige and Famine, was released in 2001 by Drakkar Productions. At the time, the band played cold and melodic black metal inspired by the mysterious and melancholic atmospheres of the wintry landscapes. Just after the release of "Tristesse Hivernale" Alcest turned into a solo project again since Neige decided to change of direction and concept in order to explore more intimate themes.

"Les voyages de l'âme" ("The Journeys of the Soul") is Alcest's third album and contains the quintessence of the group's creative work to date. While "Le secret," the debut EP from 2005, was the key to the world of Alcest, "Les voyages ..." unites everything that characterises Alcest in terms of concept and music. While an epic composition such as "Là où naissent les couleurs nouvelles" would have found its place also on "Écailles de lune," "Beings of Light" with its blazing character reminds of the ground-breaking "Le secret." On the other hand, "Autre temps" - the album's first single to which there is also an impressive and visually stunning video clip - is a prime example for the melodic and catchy side of Alcest that initially came to the fore on the band's debut album "Souvenirs d'un autre monde." Something that is common to all of the songs, however, is the predominant feeling of euphoria and bliss, always subtly overshadowed by melancholia and yearning. A feeling akin to that which you experience when you think about the otherworld of Alcest that awaits us all.
